Coaching

As an analogy, unprepared a trainee can be compared to an ostrich pursuing personal goals with little awareness of ‘political’ organizational and cultural insight, their head in the sand protecting themselves in their comfort zone, when they need to be the wise owl, the role model with political insight, working towards collective organizational goals, developing personally and professionally simultaneously.

A recent study conducted by Olivero, Bain and Kopelman involving 31 managers over two months found that training alone increased productivity by 22.4%.

However, when training was augmented by 8 weeks of one-on-one coaching, productivity increased by 88%. Training with coaching achieved three times the impact.

To conclude, organizations need qualified and experienced, client centered trainers, providing realistic and experiential challenges, coupled with effective debriefs, taking trainees out of their comfort zone. And the missing key? Coaching for trainees during implementation phases to ensure their learning can be ‘lived’ despite organizational pressures.
