3. Training helps employees understand your expectations

Your business has rules and regulations. Do your employees understand these rules? Do they know that you expect them to greet customers within 60 seconds of walking in the door? Do they know you want the phone answered on three rings or less? Has this knowledge ever come from you, or has it just been passed from new employee to new employee, getting more watered down each time it got shared?

Training is an easy way for you to explain all of these expectations with your team. 60% of respondents in the Bayt.com ‘What Makes a Company an Attractive Place to Work?’ poll said that the thing they appreciate most is when they know what’s expected of them at work, and training is one way of bringing clarity to their job and helping them understand your expectations.

Finally, managers must determine where training is needed. It is usually a poor use of resources to implement a department-wide generalized training program. Scarce resources, such as a training budget should be allocated where it is most needed. If the company’s training budget permits each employee to be trained, then training should be customized to the needs of the department and to the skills and aptitudes of each employee.

Through training, employees will feel grateful that their employer has thought about furthering their skills to help them do a better job.

This will not only promote loyalty and happiness in the workplace, but will also increase employees’ motivation and understanding of the bigger picture.
