Create a strong rapport...

... and sense of trust with the client. Reinforce your confidentiality policy up front. The client must know whatever is said or done will not be divulged to anyone.

Don’t rush

Be sure your client is relaxed and receptive. I find it takes more time to achieve this with my male clients than my female ones. Male clients tend to resist the concept of letting go and relaxing; of letting down that guard which society has taught them to maintain.

Explaining step by step (as much as possible) what is going to happen in their session, so there are no surprises, is a great way to begin this process.

Follow this by using breathing or meditative techniques to instill physical relaxation and then deepen it to include mental relaxation.
