the coppola
The coppola (from the English 'cap')was also part of the
traditional Sicilian clothing. The coppola is a traditional
Sicilian, Calabrian and Sardinian cap, used by the English
nobility in the eighteenth century. It is thought that the
origin of the word is a transliteration of the English 'cap'
or the Latin 'caput' -testa-. The cap, originally in tweed and
then in velvet, soon became popular. The appearance in
Sicily of the coppola is traced back to the second half of
the nineteenth century, and attributed to the English nobles
who came to invest there.
This hat became the hallmark of a social class, that of the people, so
that the tailors of the time produced it in different shapes and colors
and it became mandatory even in cases of mourning.
The coppola has been a symbol of Sicilian culture for a long time.
