F & B
‘ Imizuzu’ translates to 67 minutes, a tribute to Nelson Mandela. The label contains hidden details that reveal themselves under a torch, including one of my favourite Mandela quotes:“ People who carry peace in their hearts are never afraid to forgive.” The wine left a deep and lasting impression.
3. Winemaker to watch Erika Obermeyer. She has brought new life to Agter-Paarl while producing exceptional wines from other regions. Her Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon expressions show integrity and excellence.
4. Most memorable glass The 2018 Sijnn White and the 2014 67 Imizuzu. Both lie outside my usual palate preferences yet their depth and emotional resonance made them unforgettable.
5. Best summer red A lightly chilled Catherine Marshall Grenache from the Swartland. Vibrant, expressive and wonderfully versatile.

1. Comfort pour Tembela Syrah 2024. I can’ t get over this wine. It shows the true character of the Polkadraai Hills.
2. Biggest surprise of 2025 Lalela by Natasha Williams and Wade Sander. A Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon blend where the wine and winemaking team are a perfect match.
3. Winemaker or region to watch Rϋdger van Wyk at Doolhof Winery and New Dawn. It is indeed a new dawn.
4. Most memorable glass Donkiesbaai 2021 Grenache Cinsault blend. Crunchy red fruit, bright energy and a fresh finish. I paired it with Chicken Prego and loved it.

6. Best winter light wine Bubbles. Whether Cap Classique or Champagne, they transcend season, food and moment.
7. Wine to cellar for five years? Beyond global icons like the Château Margaux or Château Pétrus, my South African picks are: Mvemve Raats MR de Compostella( all vintages), 2014 67 Imizuzu by 4G Wines and all singlevineyard Chenins by Chris and Andrea Mullineux.
8. Favourite non-wine drink Anything in the world of brown spirits. A well-made Old Fashioned, an elegant cognac – neat, or a matured single malt like the Macallan 30-Year- Old.
9. Song pairing Brenda Fassie’ s“ It’ s Nice to Be with People”. It lifts the spirit and pairs with any mood or bottle.
