AFTER A FLOOD
If your home has flooded , there are steps you need to take to protect your family , save your home , prevent health hazards , and recoup as much of the cost of repairs as possible from your insurer .
• Wait until officials have declared the area safe to return to your home or business . A flood damaged building can be dangerous .
• Protect Yourself . Floodwaters can contain many harmful things such as raw sewage , chemical waste , lumber , broken glass , trash and other debris .
• Document Flood Damage . Take photos or video of all property damage including water line depths .
• Be Aware of Electrical Hazards . Don ’ t turn power on or off while standing in water . Contact an electrician to check the electrical system before turning the power back on .
• Prevent Mold Growth . Remove floodwater , increase air flow , and throw away items that can ’ t be cleaned or dried quickly .
• Clean properly . Use a 10 % bleach solution on all surfaces .
