Dignitaries Break Ground on Final Phase of Complete 540 Project
N . C . Turnpike Authority and NCDOT officials joined dignitaries from across the region in May 2024 to celebrate the groundbreaking for Phase 2 of the Complete 540 project . This phase will include extending the expressway around Garner ’ s fast-growing southern areas and onward to Knightdale , providing the missing link to complete the 540 outer loop around greater Raleigh .
WakeMed Gets Approval for Garner Hospital
WakeMed in August 2023 received a certificate of need to build a 45-bed acute care hospital that will complement the health system ’ s Mental Health & Well-Being Hospital on the same 53-acre site in Garner . WakeMed ’ s Whole-Person Health Campus at the intersection of White Oak Road and Timber Drive East will be an integral part of a 220-acre mixed-use district .
Town and Conservation Group Complete Major Land Acquisition
The Triangle Land Conservancy in November 2023 purchased one of the last large tracts of undeveloped land in Garner and transferred it to the Town to become a future public nature preserve . The protection of the 93-acre property added to TLC ’ s 40-acre acquisition on the shores of Lake Benson in 2016 , and the Town ’ s acquisition of an adjacent 32 acres in 2021 , to create a continuous tract of 165 acres of protected land along Lake Benson and Swift Creek .
