TOURISM TODAY

Events trek

My name is Juan Andrés Peluffo García, I am in first semester of the Bachelor of Business in Tourism and Hospitality Management, and I would like to share with you one of my nice experiences in Unicolombo.

Last February 24th, I had the opportunity to know more about the majestic history of Cartagena trough a walking tour organized by our teacher of Tourist Theory, Sorelis Solano, and guided by the teacher Alfredo Pérez in the historic downtown.

At 14:00, I arrived to Éxito San Diego, our starting point. There were only four students, so I waited with them until 15:00 while we talked about our expectations. Once we were all together, we started the tour. Our first stop was the Military Battery of San Pedro Mártir, a historical place that was decisive in the past to defend the walled city from pirate attacks.

Then, we went to the Bastion of Santa Catalina enjoying the beauty view of the sea. There were many tourists there taking pictures of themselves. Oh, I almost forget, the heat was unbearable! Even when I wore a cap, the sun blinded me, it was fun to watch my classmates covering their faces with their hands, fleeing from the sun's rays.

After visiting the bastion of San Lucas, we went to visit parks and squares, such as Simón Bolivar park (which was the first one with fountains of the city), Santo Domingo square, the beautiful Cathedral, and Fernandez de Madrid square, etc.

To finish the tour, we went to Getsemaní, a neighborhood full of culture, historical sites (such as the Plazoleta del Pozo and the church of Santo Toribio), and many amazing murals. My favorite was the mural of a hummingbird located near the church.

When the tour finished, we were all very tired. We stayed next to a church talking, making videos and taking photos. Three students talked with a 24 years old tourist from Hawaii. He came to Cartagena to know our culture. Although he didn’t know it, my classmates used him to practice their English.

The tour was over. After eating a few ‘raspados’,, we went home satisfied and happy. I am very grateful with Unicolombo and the teachers for giving us the opportunity to know a little more about the history of Cartagena, a history that deserves to be known by everyone.
