Let’s clean the beaches!

Beaches represent a privileged place on touristic destinations due to they offer a wide range of recreational opportunities, in addition, beaches provide habitats for a wide variety of plants and animals, for these reasons the importance of taking care of them and keeping them clean is evident, that is why the International Coastal Cleanup was born.

Reduce pollution, improve the habitat and health of various marine species and of course, preserve the tourist attraction, employment and health of thousands of people, those are some goals of this day, which was instituted by the Ocean Conservancy in 1991 and is currently celebrated in more than 157 countries every third Saturday of September (the original day is the 21st same month).

How are the goals archived?

On this day thousands of volunteers around the world gather to remove solid waste from the beaches such as paper, cans, plastics etc. this way they raise awareness between the community. In Cartagena this year the Bahía foundation celebrated coastal cleanup with an activity in which I participated with a thousand of volunteers, they were really nice people, we got the beaches free of waste together, that was funny and left a feeling of satisfaction; you can meet interesting people and get that feeling too in activities like this one, the invitation is opened for all tourism students, tourism service providers and the community in general to join the cleanup beaches movement not only one day but the whole year.

Some action that can you can do in order to help the beach environment are: deposit garbage in the indicated places, use environment friendly blockers, do not throw leftovers into the sea or the beach and pick up the trash you see at the sand to put it in the correct place.
