THE ELK RIVER
The Elk River is a 220km freestone tributary of the Kootenay River connecting Elk Lakes near the Continental Divide , with Lake Koocanusa and the Columbia River .
In the Elk Valley , the river is treasured as an endless source of inspiration for local artists , a world-renowned fly-fishing destination , and a favourite for family float trips , white water rafting , and adventure kayaking . Many parks are located along its banks and the paved , accessible 5.3km Fernie Valley Pathway follows its course from the Fernie Visitor Information Centre to Mt Fernie Provincial Park .
