The
he town of Quilpie in South West Queensland is the central base for the Quilpie shire, covering an area of 67, 485 square
kilometres and including the towns of Eromanga, Adavale, Cheepie and Toompine. The Quilpie Shire is proud to be a part of the
Natural Sciences Loop Road which offers travellers opportunities to learn about Astronomy, Birdwatching, Dinosaurs, Geology,
History, Heritage and Wetlands. Start your adventures at the Quilpie Visitor Information Centre and let our friendly staff help
you prepare for a holiday as busy or relaxing as you wish.
“Friendly”, “tidy”, “would move here in a heartbeat”! Just some of the wonderful comments made by the many travellers who have visited
Quilpie. What makes Quilpie so wonderful? Whether it be watching the beautiful sunset atop Baldy Top lookout, playing a round of night golf in
the Summer, walking along the Bulloo River looking for local birdlife, fossicking for a Boulder Opal or simply sitting under a shady gumtree along
Lake Houdraman, the reasons why you should visit Quilpie are endless.
From Quilpie why not head West 108 kilometres to ‘the furthest town from the sea in Australia’, Eromanga. Famous not just for its mass oil
production, Eromanga in recent years has become famous for significant Dinosaur bone discoveries. While in Eromanga be sure to visit The Old
Royal Hotel, once a Cobb & Co. Staging post and the Living History Centre Theatre next to the playground.
96 Kilometres North of Quilpie, a population of 25 is all that remains after a change of the planned railway from Adavale to Quilpie
was the beginning of the end for this pioneering town’s prosperity. Graves dating from the early 1800’s are a testament to the
harsh lifestyle and daily struggle of the early settlers. A Mini Museum in the old butcher house displays local relics from over a
century ago. Find great spots along the river for fishing, yabbying, birdwatching and camping.
The tiny town of Cheepie, with a population of 1, was first surveyed in 1914 and for a short time was the railhead from Charleville. At its peak
Cheepie had a police station, blacksmith, railway station, tent boarding houses, butcher shop, bakery and 2 organic vegetable gardens. Be sure to
visit the old railway station when in Cheepie.
Located 80 kilometres south of Quilpie and with a grand population of 2, the sign says it all, ‘TOOMPINE – Pub without a town’. The Toompine
Pub, also once a staging post for Cobb & Co., is all that remains of a once bustling town. The pub is rich with history and also home to goats,
donkeys, alpacas, birds and sheep, ensuring this oasis in the middle of nowhere is a unique destination for the whole family.
The Quilpie Shire is filled with experiences, characters and beauty you won’t find anywhere else in the world so
make sure you see all of them during your time in the Shire.
