ilawa is a small town located southeast of Wangaratta on the main road
between Myrtleford and Glenrowan, Victoria.
Milawa is situated in the heart of the Milawa
Gourmet Region, which is an area noted for its
wineries, farms, restaurants, local produce and craft.
The region also extends west to the small town of
Oxley, north to Tarrawingee and east to Markwood.
Major attractions include the Brown Brothers
Winery with its Epicurean Centre, the Milawa
Cheese Company, Milawa Mustards and the Olive
Shop.
The town centre of Milawa is situated at the
intersection of the road to Myrtleford (Snow Road)
and the road to Bobinawarrah. A selection of shops,
cafes, and a bakery are located here, including the
historic Milawa Hotel which was established in
1865
A forerunner in regional produce and world-class
wines, Milawa is ripe for exploration set amidst the
scenic backdrop of Mt Buffalo.
Milawa and Oxley are the centre of the Milawa
Gourmet Region, where you can enjoy a bustling
café and restaurant culture, and meet producers of
specialty cheese, mustard, bread, olives, berries and
honey, as well as jams, pickles and preserves. Wander
from cellar door to cellar door by car or ‘Pedal to
Produce’ on your bike. Stop off at the Wangaratta
Visitor Centre en-route to the area to pick up your
‘Pedal to Produce’ basket and maps.
The region’s ideal climate and topography have
cultivated an abundance of passionate producers
and the area is a must-do for foodies and wine lovers.
Other attractions include cycling the Alpine
Valley Rail Trail, hiking, scenic drives, fishing, horse
riding, 4WD and camping. There are also a number
of festivals and celebrations throughout the year.
