New master suite ; remodel of kitchen and bathrooms ; repurposed bedroom
The homeowners of this traditional ranch discovered how technology has revolutionized remodeling . Joe French of Louisville Handyman utilized architectural software to suggest floor plans and help the owners visualize design possibilities .
A better use of space and rejuvenation of the home ’ s interior were the objectives of the project that was executed in phases . Consideration was given to building a new master suite onto the back of the house . That proved unnecessary with French ’ s approach which reconfigured the existing floor plan .
The former living room , one bedroom and bathroom were combined to form the new master suite which includes a sitting area and walk-in closet . The suite ’ s elegant bathroom is characterized by raised panel sable-stained cherry doors with black glazing . A custom tile shower evokes the appearance of marble and is set off by Baroque ornamentation . The new master bedroom includes crown molding , can lights and plantation shutters .
There ’ s no hint of the space ’ s previous poor layout in the enlarged French Country kitchen that has a slight Rococo influence . The dishwasher and metallic gray granite composite sink and dishwasher are placed in the raised-bar center island , establishing a work triangle and providing more counter space around the range . Staggered eggshellpainted maple perimeter cabinets , some with mullion glass doors , and hutch are individualized by a brushed technique . They are complemented by the black-stained alder wood island . Two materials and colors of countertops---Pergaminho granite and Wellington Cambria quartz---work in tandem for heightened visual interest . A marble subway tile backsplash highlights the decorative hood over the new gas range . Soffits were removed to allow cabinets to extend to the ceiling with fluted crown molding . A 45 degree pantry with angled roll-outs provides storage and anchors the run of cabinetry . Sitting on carved feet with elaborate corners and detailed onlays , the uniquely crafted hutch unites the kitchen and living space .
White cabinetry and a spacious closet system occupy a former bedroom . Adjoining it is a bathroom with distressed maple recessed panel cabinetry that has a smoke rub-through stain with black glazing . An Ogee-edged granite vanity top and satin nickel-beaded knobs complete the look . Visitors will feel right at home in a redecorated bedroom off the main hall . The guest bathroom ’ s Shaker style vanity is dressed up with crystal knobs . The remodel project also included installing hardwood flooring throughout the main living area , adjusting the HVAC for space alterations , new lighting , and updating the plumbing in all bathrooms .
