INSIDE CPL Working towards a better future Meet Bindi Wythes from CPL’s My Life Consultancy Q A What does your role involve? I am a Service Planner with the My Life Consultancy Team. I work with people to develop flexible and creative approaches to meet their disability support needs, as well as creating plans to support them to achieve their life goals. Q A What’s the best thing about your job? This might sound clichéd but I genuinely enjoy being part of something that makes people’s lives better and easier. I love being part of their journey as they work towards a better future. A lot of what I do is offering assistance along that journey by providing information, support and help with problem solving. “I recently met with a young woman whose goal was to maintain and build her strength. We worked together to develop a plan that included accessing weekly physiotherapy, employing support staff to assist her with swimming and to purchase the equipment she requires to achieve her goal.” Q Why should someone go to a service planner instead of doing it themselves? A A good planner assists people to reflect on how things are now, how they would like things to be in the future and then works with them to come up with practical steps to achieve their goals. They can provide information about resources and programs that are available; often this information is hard to find when you’re going at it alone. Plus, with a planner you can bounce ideas around and we might be able to introduce new ideas and solutions. Although no two people are the same, experienced planners have come up with many different and innovative plans for many different people in their role and you will be able to benefit from their experience. Q A Tell us about the things you like to do outside of work. A lot of my time outside of work revolves around my family. I have two school aged daughters who both play netball and I recently joined a netball team myself, with some other mums. Q A This is my first return to team sport since I left high school (which was a long time ago), so I was a little nervous... but it’s so much fun, a real laugh! What experience helps you in your role? I am a qualified social worker which means I am a specialist in providing practical support, counselling, information and emotional support to people who need it most. I have worked with people with disabilities and their families for nearly 20 years in a variety positions. I have been at CPL for 7 years; prior to working in my current position I coordinated respite support for children and families. Q A What excites you about the future? I can’t wait for the NDIS, it’s what gets me out of bed in the morning! People with disabilities having choice and control is something that has been a long time coming; they are the experts of what they need. The NDIS will empower people to determine what support they need, how they want it delivered and who they want to get support from. Q A Any advice for clients? The NDIS will support people to increase independence, to get more involved in the community, to access to the aids and equipment they need as well as having the support they require to live the life they choose. For the first time YOU get to fully decide how you want to live your life! I would recommend people start thinking now about what kind of life they want for themselves, or their loved one, in the future. Think about what is needed to make this vision come to life and CPL will support you to make this happen. Do you need help with planning? CPL’s My Life Consultancy can work with you to build your confidence and identify the services you need to reach your goals!
