Residency Jermaine the Shopkeeper 2.1 Culturally Curated City The experience of the same city can be completely differently by different social groups. Social positining becomes the frame of reference for one’s access, interpretation and experience of the spaces around them. The places we choose to eat, meet and recommennd to others and the routes we make in between are a curated construction of who we are now and a reflection of our aspirations for our personal and shared futures. “Deep hanging out” on the Broadwater Farm Estate allowed me to experience the area as recommended by three perspectives - Jermaine the estate shop keeper, my Airbnb host Barry, and of that of a lone tourist and visitors. I recorded these 3 spatial insights through a series of walks determined by their cultural view of the area. In addition is the commemorative protest route of the ‘Justice for Mark Duggan’ campaign. The collages below are based on Barry’s and Jermaine’s perspectives of the estate they have in common and its surrounding areas. They illustrate the differences between the city that someone curates for themselves or to show to others. Curation is a form of design. Jermaine the Shopkeeper Arrival route to the Airbnb
