PACE SETTERS
TWO OCEANS PACE SETTER SELECTION PROCESS
Pace setting in South Africa has grown to the extent that there are now several provincial
pace setter groups .
Potential pace setters are asked to submit an application providing their pace setting history and the desired times they are willing to pace at Two Oceans .
A selection committee made up of national pace setter leaders then sifts through these applications to match up pace setters to the number of available slots and times agreed with Two Oceans Marathon .
Major factors considered are their TOM historical record and their pace setting record in the previous 12 months .
In the Ultra , teams of 2 or 3 pace setters are put together for the various time slots , to provide a better flag success rate . In the Half , pace setters run individually so that we can cover more times in different start batches .
Across all the pace setters , we try to obtain a good gender mix , a good
mix of local and out-of-province pace setters , and a good mix of TOMexperienced pace setters with some TOM pacing novices .
Every pace setter is provided with a pace chart that they must use on race day . The pace chart is route profile adjusted , i . e . we go slower uphill and quicker downhill , and allows us to run slightly slower as the distance increases , which is the reality for most runners . Depending upon the distance and the speed of the bus , pace setters will incorporate walk breaks into their run , obviously favouring taking walk breaks on the hills .
Runners are free to join the bus or not , or to hop on , or hop off as they wish . If you have specific questions about which is the bus for you , meet the pace setters at the Expo , or talk to them in the start pens . Whether you join a bus or not , we wish everyone a successful race and that you reap the rewards of all your training .
