I
am so excited that we are finally here ! Following two years of cancellations due to the COVID pandemic , the world ’ s most beautiful marathon – which will now be known as the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon , or TTOM – will once again be run over the Easter Weekend . The 2022 running of the Ultra Marathon will be its 51st since inception , marking the start of the second fifty years of existence for this jewel event on the Western Cape ’ s calendar of highlights .
One of the big announcements for this year was announcing that we have signed leading sports apparel giant Totalsports as our new title sponsor . We are excited to be staging our world-class , globally iconic event in partnership with Totalsports , especially with their commitment to enhancing the runner experience . This ethos underpins much of who we are as an organisation , and when it comes to doing more for the runner , we could not have asked for a better alignment than with a brand that is as runner-centric as we are .
The TTOM contributes up to R672 million to the local provincial economy annually , making it Africa ’ s biggest running event when measured by this metric . We feel strongly about supporting local producers , suppliers and

innovators and in keeping with this , we have a dedicated Entrepreneur Zone for the first time at our Expo . Small businesses were offered preferential rates as exhibitors in recognition of how hard it has been for them to survive the past two years , as we wanted to do our bit to get behind small to medium enterprises .
Our inaugural Running Summit showcases the best of running expertise , insights , science , athletic prowess and even philanthropy . This is another first we were proud to launch , and in yet another ground-breaking milestone for our organisation , the race is also sachet- and plastic-free , thanks to our Official Hydration Partners , Powerade and Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages . Coke , water and Powerade will be dispensed in 175ml wax-lined cups throughout both the Half Marathon and Ultra Marathon .
The pandemic has affected all aspects of our lives and limited our participation in this much-loved sport . Navigating the challenges brought about by the pandemic has forced us to look at things differently and respond in an acutely agile manner as we go along . Our Conquer the Current campaign is a tribute to the resilience each and every one of us has had to show , and most especially our runners , who are amazing just by virtue of ling up at the start line .
Have an incredible race and continue to conquer life ’ s challenges , and celebrate life ’ s triumphs .

Today ’ s excitement represents a long-awaited day in the Mother City for another iconic race of the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon . It ’ s a pleasure to see so many back on the road to fulfil the runners ’ hunger for racing , and we are looking forward to crowning new champions in both the men and women ’ s races .
Shadowed by the fantastic scenery of the City of Cape Town , it will be a full day of fun . Professional athletes and social runners will be under superb health care and security in an excellent family atmosphere that has come to define this great event .
Ultra-marathons are part of our DNA in South Africa , and the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon is at the heart of it . So once again , I humbly request everyone to respect race officials , including the referees , marshals , law enforcement agencies and race organisers , to ensure that we all contribute to the safe , effective functioning of the event . We also urge the runners to enjoy the challenge and wholly embrace the spirit of fair competition .
We thank the City of Cape Town for their continued support of athletics in the province and our affiliate Western Province Athletics , the Local Organising Committee and all support staff , for once again putting together a great show . We are wishing everyone a pleasant day of competition and festivities .

Western Province Athletics has over the past years witnessed a massive growth of the Totalsport Two Oceans Marathon ( TTOM ), and as a federation , we welcome our local , national and international athletes to the Mother City .
We salute the TTOM Office and Board , the Event Office , and the vast number of volunteers who provide an excellent service and experience to the athletes that will fill some of the streets of Cape Town . These individuals ensure that our athletes can participate in a safe environment under the current challenging situation governing the hosting of mass participation events .
