When you called to be on this tour , at first my eyebrows raised because sonically it didnt seem like a fit , but from all accounts its worked out perfectly .
NATE : Yeah , I mean I ’ m not really into tours where the bill and music is similar veins between each band . This is like a rock and roll show that I think fans will dig because they are getting everything in that three or four-hour span .
“ Red Hands Black Deeds ” is a big departure from “ Smokin Hearts Broken Guns ”. Do you think the musical voice of Shamans is changing ?
NATE : I think whatever we do at the time is the true voice of Shamans . I would say that “ Smoking Hearts , Broken Guns ” is a departure from Shine and so on and so forth . I feel like it ’ s definitely an evolution . We all knew that we were doing something different when we were doing it . Obviously , in the back of your head , when you ’ re thinking are the fans going to accept this or are they going to boot and reject the idea of change and taste the change as well . So , there is a little bit of nervousness there . There ’ s still some nervousness there as the release gets a little more seasoned . But we knew we were doing something different and it was important just to accept that and fully embrace it as opposed to fighting it . You have to capture whatever magic you can find whenever you ’ re in the studio writing .
You can say anything about the record but the one thing you can ’ t deny is it feels genuine and it is very organic .
“ A Longer View ”. I want to talk about that song because it ’ s a statement song , if I ever heard one now . It seems to be a song that is written for right now that people need to listen to . So , I ’ m real curious man . How did that one come about ?
NATE : Lyrically , it does discuss a lot of what ’ s happening now and just the fact that there ’ s sides to everything . There ’ s this us against them and the fact that we can ’ t just seem to get along so you kind of act a little bit . That song was really fun to make . That song was one million percent written on the cusp , in the studio . I would say that it ’ s really the only produced song on the whole record . It ’ s interesting because when you listen to that song , it ’ s like a song that lasts like one of those 6-8 minute epic songs . But it ’ s really only a 4-4.5 minute song . But it seems a lot longer than it is because there ’ s movements . There are whole parts that are separate and they meld well together . Continued on Page 11 .

Was the music first or was
the story line written and
then you went into the
tracks?
Emily: The story was completely written
before the music was created. We did some
demos, and stuff like that, before everything
had come together but then I stopped and I
really went into the story. I tweaked every-
thing and put it all together for that first
comic before we released Volume 1 because
I wanted to make sure that everything corre-
lated perfectly. It seemed like I had to take a
step back to make it all sync together.
Do you see September as
kind of a superhero?
Emily: She’s a hero character with hero story

write the new material?

ect. When everybody started doing social
media, and that became the thing back in
the early 2000’s, I was coming into the musi-
cal part of my career. I was experimenting
in music and things like that. I thought that
one day I really wanted to do something that
was different, like a straight up music proj-
ect. A few years ago, I thought this might be
the right time to do that and I wanted to do
something transmedia. We have all of the
social media outlets to tell stories, and it is
such an interesting platform and landscape
to tell stories on. I thought this would be a
great idea to do it now and that’s how the
“band”, or the art project, was born.
arc and storyline. And her character is a
hero’s journey. It’s very translucent for that.
Because of her powers and what she does,
and her fascination with life and death,
she’s viewed in the beginning as not what
you think a hero should be.It’s kind of like
an anti-hero because she’s bringing death.
Once you get into the story, and you figure
out what she’s actually doing, she’s granting
second chances at life to right their wrongs
or work out whatever they need to do, which
seems like more of a heroic story arc. Then
again, on top of that, you have the fact that
she’s playing God, which is not a heroic act.
There’s all of this dichotomy between all
of her different facets of who she is. I think
that’s what makes her an interesting charac-
ter. Is she a hero? Is she not a hero? What
is she really? I think she is just a mirror for
the human existence. We’re all kind of like
this one big orb of darkness and light in this
world together. Nobody is ever just purely
good or purely evil. There’s all sort of stuff
involved and I think she is very much a re-
semblance of that.
Do you think that Septem-
