When you called to be on this tour , at first my eyebrows raised because sonically it didnt seem like a fit , but from all accounts its worked out perfectly .
NATE : Yeah , I mean I ’ m not really into tours where the bill and music is similar veins between each band . This is like a rock and roll show that I think fans will dig because they are getting everything in that three or four-hour span .
“ Red Hands Black Deeds ” is a big departure from “ Smokin Hearts Broken Guns ”. Do you think the musical voice of Shamans is changing ?
NATE : I think whatever we do at the time is the true voice of Shamans . I would say that “ Smoking Hearts , Broken Guns ” is a departure from Shine and so on and so forth . I feel like it ’ s definitely an evolution . We all knew that we were doing something different when we were doing it . Obviously , in the back of your head , when you ’ re thinking are the fans going to accept this or are they going to boot and reject the idea of change and taste the change as well . So , there is a little bit of nervousness there . There ’ s still some nervousness there as the release gets a little more seasoned . But we knew we were doing something different and it was important just to accept that and fully embrace it as opposed to fighting it . You have to capture whatever magic you can find whenever you ’ re in the studio writing .
You can say anything about the record but the one thing you can ’ t deny is it feels genuine and it is very organic .
“ A Longer View ”. I want to talk about that song because it ’ s a statement song , if I ever heard one now . It seems to be a song that is written for right now that people need to listen to . So , I ’ m real curious man . How did that one come about ?
NATE : Lyrically , it does discuss a lot of what ’ s happening now and just the fact that there ’ s sides to everything . There ’ s this us against them and the fact that we can ’ t just seem to get along so you kind of act a little bit . That song was really fun to make . That song was one million percent written on the cusp , in the studio . I would say that it ’ s really the only produced song on the whole record . It ’ s interesting because when you listen to that song , it ’ s like a song that lasts like one of those 6-8 minute epic songs . But it ’ s really only a 4-4.5 minute song . But it seems a lot longer than it is because there ’ s movements . There are whole parts that are separate and they meld well together . Continued on Page 11 .
