to different songwriters and to which was my intention . Then the pandemic hit and all of the that got squashed . I said , you know what ? F @# K IT ! I ’ m gonna write this album myself . I ’ ve never written any riffs like this before , but who says I can ’ t pull something out of my ass and figure it out , that ’ s what everybody does . Music exists somewhere , where are we pulling these songs from . I knew that I didn ’ t want to write another album about me . All the albums I have done have been personal albums . I mean this is a personal one as well but I was able to give those experiences to a fictional character , The Prince of Metal himself . I was able to give him a backstory , and emotional pull and continue to write his story arc . That has been real important to me for the development of this album . It ’ s made it a lot more fun in that way because I don ’ t have to keep on writing about me . It allows me to rip into things that I couldn ’ t normally write about if it was just about me .
Suddenly the heavens had open in answer to all of his praise but in the blink of an eye the angel burst into flames and then came and dragged him away . In the twisting of steels and the slice of the blade there is a separation there . The kings of the land will long be remembered . You have to remember to ones that have come before you , especially in the metal space . Making a classic metal album , I somehow have to put myself into that age of the 80 ’ s which means I would have been influenced by bands in the 50s through the 70 ’ s and who were my peers and the others in that genre space making music that appeals to that space while forging my own path .
From your debut album to your time in QR till now , what has been your biggest eye opener about the industry ?
JD : After my album “ Celebrate ” I went to Nashville and started working with James Michael from SIXX AM . I got to pick his brain on songwriting
We ’ re you able to separate yourself emotionally from the situation during the writing process ?
JD : I mean he is me in a sense , but I ’ m not him . I ’ m not the Prince of Metal . If someone were to ask me who is the Prince of Metal I would say exactly WHO IS the Prince of Metal . Point me to him when you meet him . ( Chuckles ) The song The Prince of Metal is taking a certain group of events and putting them into a fantasy world to where it ’ s like , okay , this guy is in a band with a bunch of older dudes and their all set in their ways and he follows along with it and realizes OH there ’ s an opening , Oh Okay , peace out ! I am going to forge my own path . He is at a position where he is at a crossroads in life .
