Winter is often referenced in the media as a dark time; a“ tunnel” at which the“ light” at the end is Spring. However, Winter is also the time of year where most festivals and holidays are concentrated, simply the“ most wonderful time of the year”. Whether you were a Roman during Saturnalia, or a modern person listening to Mariah Carey while making cookies, Winter is a time of family, festivals, and fun. The trees are barren but the ground glows bright white in reflection of the sun, much like the moon.
One thing I like about the winter is the cold. Yes, I know that is the very reason people dislike winter, but hear me out.
The cold brings us together. We wave at our neighbors as we shovel our driveways. We huddle with our families around a fireplace. This winter I called my grandmother who lives in Madurai, India, where an excavation in 2023 found Roman coins with the face of Augustus on them. She hadn’ t seen snow in a while, so over FaceTime, I showed her it.
The sun shines from two places in winter, the ground and the sky. In a way, the coldest days are the sunniest outside.
