"It has the 'firsts' of the emperors, and it was the time of tension and political experiment within the empire. It was also the first [part of] history I learned as a Latin student, so in high it holds some sentimental value for me as a student."

Grace Rivers

Dreher High School, South Carolina

The Julio-Claudians were all interesting in their own ways, ranging from Augustus beginning the Pax Romana, to Caligula making Incitatus a senator, to Nero being a crazy guy. It's the different kinds of chaos Rome experienced during the beginning of its empire that really shaped it in years to come, both within itself and across the world. Plus, hearing about these first five emperors for the first time was a great lesson in Latin class!"

Chandana Suru

"They appointed people as their successors due to merit and not by birth order (for the most part). They also presided over periods of great prosperity and peace, and I especially like Marcus Aurelius' Meditations and how it can be applied to everyday life!"

Priscilla Wang

"Can’t go wrong with the classics! We all know them; we all love them."

Hana Conte

Summit Country Day, Ohio

"This dynasty is full of crazy emperors who are just so interesting to learn about (and occasionally mock, of course). It's also really fun to dive deep into the strange family dynamics that characterize the Julio-Claudians!"
