Why Did you join the JCL?

Reesey: "I was lucky enough to be automatically enrolled in middle school as part of Latin at my school. I really started to engage with the organization at first because, perhaps similarly to many of you, I love Latin and wanted to take part in opportunities that allowed me to learn more about it. As the time went on I became even more interested in JCL because I could share my passion with this amazing community and am so grateful that I joined."

Stella: "I wanted to find more people my age who were interested in Latin and mythology— I’d say I was pretty successful :)."

Sophia: "I grew up reading a lot of books about mythology (Goddess Girls, anyone?) and watching a lot of videos about ancient history, so I attended a meeting of my school’s mysteriously-named Classics Club and ended up staying because of how inspiring the other members’ enthusiasm for the subject was!"

Ameera: "I joined JCL because of all the amazing people that were already a part of the community. I loved to idea of bonding over shared interests (no matter how niche or strange they might seem to others). I also really enjoyed learning about facets of Roman life outside of just their language; their culture, history, and traditions intrigued me, and JCL seemed like the perfect place to explore those interests even more!"

Kai: "I was a hyper-competitive middle schooler and really, really, really wanted to play certamen. Also, conventions were fun."

Aanshi: "I joined the JCL because I thought I might as well join since I was in Latin already and a lot of my friends were joining, but my first statecon really hooked me into continuing to take Latin and stay in the JCL."

Olivia: "I took interest in the JCL near the end of my seventh grade year when I was invited to spectate a round of intense Certamen in a Latin teacher’s room. Eventually, I found myself dedicating much of my time to joining our school Certamen team and participating in many of my school’s JCL events, attending my first state convention in the spring, and meeting a group of friends and mentors along the way."
