Dear snazzy JCLers,

Love to read? Love to yap? You’re in luck! The Asian and Asian American Classical Caucus (AAACC) is a professional (i.e., post–high school) organization dedicated to promoting Asian perspectives in Classics, and we’re hosting a virtual reading group for students. This is a great opportunity to meet and engage with other passionate Latin students across the country!

We’ll be reading some of the poems in Ocean Vuong’s award-winning 2016 collection, Night Sky with Exit Wounds, including but not limited to: “Telemachus,” “Trojan,” “Eurydice,” “To My Father / To My Future Son,” “Someday I’ll Love Ocean Vuong,” and more as time permits! Many of us struggle with the relevance of Classics in the modern world. This work doesn’t answer that question, but it does use the Classics to fulfill a higher

artistic purpose: to draw the arc of a modern life, a life shaped by violence and the Vietnam War. Our discussion will examine these poems, especially as they relate to Homer’s Odyssey and other classical myths. It is a transcendent collection, and we’re looking forward to hosting a productive, student-led conversation. That means we want YOU! And yes, with you! And you, too!

All students — regardless of how they identify — are welcome. While you are of course encouraged to read the poems beforehand, you do not have to do so in order to participate! We’ll be presenting, reading, and talking about them live. There may be (virtual) snacks — Garum (yum, yum) dormice (scrumptious). We’re tentatively planning the group for early August, but we’re open to your suggestions. Fill out this form: bit.ly/classicsreadinggroup to RSVP and mark your availability.
