Salvete omnes,

I am so sad that it is now time for me to write this letter to my fellow JCLers saying goodbye to such a wonderful community that I have had the pleasure serving this past year. When I began Latin in fifth grade, I had no idea what the JCL was or even that it existed beyond the realm of academics.

Now, writing this letter, I feel like the classics and the JCL are an integral part of who I now am. This past year, I had the honor of working with kind, talented, and amazing individuals that made my job as NJCL President super easy. Seeing all of our work throughout the year as a board come to fruition with you all in Tennessee was truly amazing and a memory I will hold near and dear to my heart. I am truly excited to see all the great things the next board will accomplish this upcoming year!

Thank you to all the JCLers who shared their JCLove with me in Knoxvile and at previous conventions. Having conversations with you all at the dining hall or even just a quick “hi” always brought a smile to my face. I hope to see you all in Ohio next year!

Valete,

Krish Sharma

2023-2024 NJCL President

Salvete, omnes!

When I was being forced to take Latin in 5th grade, I was certain that I would switch to a “real language” as soon as possible, but a few or maybe more rounds of Certamen later, and I don’t know who I would be without the classics or the JCL. Where else could I take Latin tests for “fun”, scream chants until I can’t speak, or tell someone that I actively want to learn attic Greek without being looked at like I have two heads?

Of all the parts of the JCL I have loved, though, being on the NJCL board has been the most fulfilling experience. During my term, I worked on several projects aimed at increasing engagement with the JCL throughout the year, not just at convention. From activity packets and Convocatio to National Classics Week and Classicalia, I have had a fantastic time getting to speak to and work with so many JCLers. This year has passed unfathomably quickly, and I still can’t believe my term is over, but I am so excited to see what the next board will go on to do.

Serving as your first vice president has been an incredible experience and honor, and I could not imagine a better end to my JCL journey. I could not be more grateful for the JCL and all the wonderful people in it. Gratias vobis ago.

Avete atque Valete,

Sophie Heitfield

2023-2024 NJCL First Vice President
