Salvete omnes,
It’s a strange feeling to be saying goodbye to something that’s been such a large part of my life for eight years. To be honest, it’s even stranger to be doing so as your outgoing president. Twelve-year-old me at her first NJCL convention would never, ever have imagined that I’d
eyed 8 AM test sessions, and delirious late-night fellowships, the JCL has transformed me. To me, this is the magic of the JCL: so many different moments, all individually inexplicable and incredible, wrapped up into one exhilarating experience that leaves you wondering, “How will I ever explain this organization and its impact on me to others?” Thanks to the diversity of opportunities available to us at the local, state, and national levels, we each have our own unique JCL experience. But we all share a common understanding of what the JCL is. I encourage you all to continue to carve your own paths in this amazing organization, and to strive with greatest effort not to go through life in silence.
Thank you for electing me as your '19-'20 president. Serving you has truly been an honor, and I will forever treasure my memories of this organization.
E corde,
Jocelyn Robertson
2019-2020 NJCL President
Salvete amici,
Six years ago I signed up for my first Latin class, following the footsteps of my brother and a rebellious urge to not take Spanish or French. However, when I made this decision, I was incredibly unaware of the impact that the classics and the culture around it would have on me. The NJCL has provided me with a unique opportunity in life, and it has not only made me a better student but a better person. The NJCL has helped me develop better responsibility, compassion, and love for the classics, and I thank this organization for providing me the family I once never knew I needed. To my Latin teacher, Mrs. Vero, I thank you for everything that you have ever done for me, from buying me a toothbrush when I lost mine at my first convention to inspiring me to run for a national office. I want to thank Ms. Sturgill for being the best committee chair and
-ing dedication to running this organization and for helping me along the way. And finally to the delegates of this organization, I thank you for this opportunity. Never let the classics die.
