STATE UPDATES

Salvete omnes! You'll be happy to know that deep in the Sonoran Desert AZJCL is doing just fine. This year we have 365 members and counting, as more schools are joining the AZJCL family. We are even working with students and teachers from a few schools, like BASIS Chandler, to help them start JCL Chapters.

Last year ended well for AZJCL. To NJCL Convention, we brought 16 delegates from three different schools, a new state record. All of our delegates competed in a variety of events and did moderately well, with our volleyball team barely losing to the legendary Wisconsin, and won two wonderful blow-up pineapples for Spirit to join our spirit cacti.

On September 13, we held our annual Salvete Stars Certamen event to welcome in the new school year, hosted by Gilbert Classical Academy. Students of all Latin levels formed mixed school teams and competed in a fun and casual relaxed Certamen tournament, with questions asking them to translate the names of popular songs, movies, and other pop culture references. This event set this year off to a great start.

Additionally, on October 19, we had the Lemuria Certamen Tournament to celebrate the Roman Holiday, hosted by BASIS Tuscan North. A traditional Certamen tournament was held, along with a fun widespread Kahoot! Round. Also, the overall top three players from each level got books to further their classical studies.

You can always check to see how AZJCL is doing by following our Instagram @arizonajuniorclassicalleague, Facebook @AZJCL, Twitter @ArizonaJCL, or visit our website at azjcl.weebly.com. We hope to have a great rest of the year and we look forward to seeing you all in Richmond!

Salvete! In August, the IJCL Executive Board got together for the overnight board meeting at Indiana University. After touring the Memorial Union, the board worked hard planning state convention, including the colloquia, events, and, most importantly, the dinner menu. In addition to state convention, we talked about ideas for this year’s scrapbook and newsletter and brainstormed ideas for the membership campaign.

This past September, a group of IJCLers from various chapters got together at Cathedral High School to attend the annual Leadership Development Academy. Attendees enjoyed thought-provoking discussion, goal setting, and break out sessions with IJCL officers. From discussing ways to build membership to meditation with our 2nd Vice President, everyone walked away excited by the new plans for their chapters.

In October, the IJCL hosted another executive board meeting at Cardinal Ritter High School where the National Convention Bust Trip, Fall Latin Day, and Certamen Invitationals were discussed. Furthermore, the officers and students guests had break out sessions to discuss icebreakers and ideas for improving future fall events.

The IJCL has had a fun time this fall and is looking forward to our upcoming state convention and Fall Latin Day!
