Today, we see photographs, read testimonies, and record numbers of the fires ravaging southeastern Australia. While the harming of atmosphere, wildlife, homes, and human life continues, firefighters continue defending against destruction. The study of classics encourages an observation of today’s world, with the lens of ancient civilizations. As understood from myth in Virgil’s Aeneid to Tacitus’s Annals, how did fires affect the people of the ancient world?
