After a week of Ludi games, graphic arts viewings, and Certamen matches, convention attendees gather at the Fargodome for That’s Entertainment, a performance showcasing the talent within the JCL. From SCL skits to Stage Crew to the Racketeers to the return of “Brown Squirrel,” the Fargodome featured acts all qualifying as “entertainment.”
Opening the night, Jacob Solman and Jackson Hammel of Georgia sang "Amarillo by Morning" with guitar accompaniment. For the second act, Smruthi Shashidhar of Texas presented a classical Indian dance. Anne Gregg and Morgan Kositzky of Indiana then took the stage performing an original composition, "When We’re Together," a vocal duet featuring ukulele and words of an ever-strengthening friendship. Next, Lena Cavicchia of Washington DC played a dynamic rendition of George Gershwin’s Preludes on piano.
Alex Chou of Massachusetts sang Bruno Mars’s "Count on Me," spreading the #JCLove as the room flooded with light from the phones of audience members swaying in the arms of friends old and new. Kelly Jeong of Georgia wowed the audience with her violin performance of Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen.” With his cover of Billie Eilish’s "idontwannabeyouanymore," Braxton Sizemore of Georgia chilled the crowd. Then Nia Abdullah of New Jersey recited Langston Hughes’s "We Wear the Mask" as a spoken word poem. Vocalist Taylor Sellers-Varela and dancing reverse-centaur Charlie Mazzeo of Illinois performed “Old Town Rome," an interpretation of “Old Town Road” completely in Latin.
The 2018-2019 NJCL performed a skit as “Bison and the Fargonauts” using Google Maps and golden arrows to lead the way to the “Golden Honey.” In search of the “Spirit Stones,” the 2018-2019 NSCL Officers traveled back in time to 2010 in an attempt to bring back the missing JCLers.
Bill Wei of Texas performed “Bagpipe Dance Tunes” on the bagpipes. Dedicated to her more than “OK” state of Oklahoma, Kathryn Powers serenaded the audience as she sang and strummed “Blackbird” by the Beatles. The second violin act of the night, Varun Mukund of Texas, played Haydn’s Concerto in G Major. In the final act, Bella Cicero and Becca Helmstetter of Wisconsin sang “I Won’t Say I’m In Love” from Disney’s Hercules as a duet.
Organizing the entire night, the SCL measured the crowd’s cheers and screams after each performance to determine this year’s winners of That’s Entertainment. Congratulations to Kathryn Powers of Oklahoma for winning third place, Bill Wei of Texas for winning second place, and Kelly Jeong of Georgia for winning first place. Thank you to all gifted performers, enthusiastic fans, and omnipresent SCLers for a talent-filled show in the Fargodome.
