Cadet Bivouac in Term 1
Around 160 cadets experienced life in the field at the Puckapunyal Training Area over the last three days of Term 1. The
camp provided the senior cadets with the opportunity to introduce the new cadets to living in the field. After carrying their
packs to their field sites, they set up their hutchies and bedding before learning about camouflage and concealment.
During the navigation exercise, they followed compass bearings to a series of checkpoints where they had to complete
various tasks, such as building tripods with poles and rope. While most enjoyed the chance to taste the cadet ration
packs, the hot meal from the Soldiers’ Mess was very welcome on the final day.
Meanwhile, the boys from our Boating Platoon attended a Powerboat Handling course at the Royal Melbourne Yacht
Squadron. Topics covered and practised during the course included boating safety, marine weather, types of
vessel/motors, docking, picking up a mooring, anchoring, man overboard recoveries, high and low speed turns and
towing. The course included on-water training off St Kilda Pier, where they got to drive a mixture of 6m powerboats
and smaller tiller inflatables.
After a busy Anzac Day for the Military Band and for those who carried veterans’ banners, the boys are now busy
rehearsing for the annual Cadet Tattoo to be held on Friday 31st May on the Main Oval at 7 pm.
Anzac Day March
Scotch Cadets continued a fine tradition by participating in the Anzac Day March, marching from the city to the
Shrine of Remembrance. The cadets were in two groups, carrying the banners for the SASR Association and the
9th Australian Division.
