A very wet winter and a busy
spring ahead!
It’s been a very wet winter for many parts of New
Zealand, especially here in the Manawatu, and
although Spring has officially arrived there seems
to still be a lot of water on the ground and still
falling from the sky than there was this time last
year. For all of those who have been calving over
the last couple of months I hope, despite the mud,
calving was otherwise uneventful.
I’ve been fairly busy over the winter months, in
June I travelled to Scotland for the World Angus
Forum as a member of the Generation Angus NZ
team to compete in the Youth competition. Despite
it being summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the
Scottish weather was very much like home - cold,
windy and wet. That aside, the trip was an amazing
experience, it was fantastic to meet so many like
minded youth from different parts of the world as
well as see a different type of farming system and
gain a better understanding of where bot h the
Angus breed and beef protein stand with reference
to the consumer. Make sure you check out Patrick
Crawshaw’s report on the WAF Youth competition
on page 4.
is fast approaching! I wish
you all the best for the
season ahead, remember not to be
too serious, relax, and enjoy showing your
animals: A&P Shows are a great place to grow your
experience, knowledge and industry network -
winning or placing in a class is an added bonus.
For those of you who are extremely organised with
steers for next year’s ‘Hoof & Hook’ competition the
are several shows in both the North and South
Islands that will be holding steer classes. You can
find a list of shows who have confirmed steer
classes for the 2017/18 show season at the back of
the newsletter.
That’s about it from me for this newsletter. I look
forward to catching up with some of you at various
shows around the country over the next few
months.
