In addition to Tegernsee , there are several other small lakes in Rottach-Egern , however tourists spend their time mainly on Tegernsee . Summertime in Tegernsee is ripe for swimming and sunbathing on its shores , sailing , rafting , tubing , canoeing , and hot air ballooning . There are myriad hiking routes in the mountains , as well as tennis courts and a golf club . And yet , despite its modest size , there are no less than five Michelin star restaurants in Rottach-Egern : two recommended facilities - Fährhütte 14 and Kirschner Stuben . Also look out for Restaurant Überfahrt Christian Jürgens ( 3-star ) and Gourmetrestaurant Dichter and Haubentaucher ( 1-star ). But even in regular , modest beer houses , you can taste delicious food and drinks . The town also regularly plays host to various festivals and holidays — an equestrian parade in August , a week of culture in September , a colorful procession to mark the harvest festival in early October , and a Christmas market in December . The only local museum is dedicated to horsedrawn carriages and vehicles , as it once lay on a trade route between Germany and Italy .
Enjoy an excellent spa break at the Bachmair Weissach Spa & Resort , where Bavarian rustic style coexists with contemporary suites . The hotel has 141 rooms and two restaurants : the historic Gasthof Zur Weissach with a traditional Bavarian cuisine and Mizu Sushi Bar , the only Japanese restaurant on Lake Tegernsee . The question is — where does Bavaria end and Japan begin ? But , as we all know , German perfectionism is capable of moving mountains — even those as big as Fuji Mountain .
In wintertime ski lovers flock to the shores of Tegernsee . The closest ski resort to Rottach-Egern is Wallberg . Convenient and compact , it is only 1.5 kilometers away from the city . Its cable car takes you up Wallberg mountain to a height of 1,722 m . The season here begins in mid-December and lasts until the end of March . The ski area is located between 790 m and 1,615 m , and the total length of the runs is 3.2 km . The resort is ideal for experienced skiers , with steep slopes , moguls , and areas with deep snow . Wallberg is Germany ’ s sunniest area , with about fifty blue-sky days per season . The resort boasts three bars and one restaurant for apres-ski fun .
By the way , you should take the ride up even if you do not come up to black slopes . The cable car runs all year round , and a stunningly beautiful panorama opens up from the top of the mountain : in the foreground you see hundreds of spruce tops soaring into the sky like Gothic spiers before submerging into the clouds belows ; in the background there is a lake which reflects like a mirror the alpine sky in its crystal clear waters , and the entire scene is punctuated by the red dots of tiled roofs scattered over the ubiquitous grass which is green allyear round .
The Mizu Onsen Spa Center is another reference to Japan . The word Mizu in Japanese has two meanings : ‘ delight ’ and ‘ cold water ’, and both perfectly express the meaning of this spa . The facility with an area of 3,000 m2 offers relaxing and beneficial procedures , including massages , wraps and scrubs using Kanebo Japanese skincare products and cosmetics from the Austrian Susanne Kaufmann and the local company Gertrud Gruber . These procedures combat ageing , activate the lymphatic system and microcirculation . You can also bathe in mineral-rich water from Lake Tegernsee . But perhaps the most memorable activity here is to warm up in a flawless German sauna , then run quickly across the snow in flip flops to the open-air thermal pool to swim 28 meters in lovely warm , but not hot water .
Afterwards every part of your body will feel refreshed and invigorated , you will get the feeling as if “ batteries have been recharged “. And you won ’ t even mind when the time comes to return home !
