Belem Tower
Officially called as the Tower of Saint Vincent, the renowned Belem Tower is built
on the Northern banks of Tagus River. Originally, this tower was built to defend
Lisbon from year 1514 to 1520. Later, it was transformed into lighthouse &
currently it is serving as a custom center.
It got listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site in year 1983. Belem Tower holds
immense significance for the people of Portugal as many of the great Portuguese
explorers such as Bartholomeu Dias, Vasco Da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan began
their voyages of discovery from Belem.
This architectural jewel has five floors named the Governor’s Hall, The King’s Hall,
the Audience Hall, the Chapel and Roof Terrace. 16 windows with cannons, roof
terrace, narrow spiral staircase & the rhinoceros gargoyle add to the beauty of
this building. Its significance & gracefulness is known for drawing a large number
of people every year.
