WINDSURFING
ew people are aware that Masirah sland Oman’s largest island off its eastern seaboard ranks
among one of the world’s top destinations for windsurfing. ong waves and sustained winds of
knots, a feature of the khareef phenomenon sweeping over the southern fringes of the country at
the time, provide ideal conditions for windsurfing, among other wind-driven pursuits, such as kite-
surfing, kiteboarding, laser sailing, paragliding and so on.
ndeed, Masirah has the potential to become a playground for wind-based extreme sports and
adventure activities. ot surprisingly, a number of proponents of these sports tend to set up shop
during the summer months when conditions are conducive for such activities. This upsurge in
interest has also fuelled the growth of small-scale tourism investments on the island.
