The discussion on oil has reached a new level
and the Belize Coalition to Save our Natural
Heritage has topped into the next generation
of decision makers and leaders - our secondary
school students. Through a series of regional
debates leading up to a national debate, debate
teams from across the country were planning,
researching and rehearsing to win a spot in the
semi-final round leading to the finale..
After a month of preparation, the launch and
kick-off for the Central Region Competition
was held on November 18, 2013 at the Bliss
Center for Performing Arts between The
Belize Rural High School and Belize High
School. The resolution was "Nationalization of
Belize's oil industry would bring more benefits
from oil revenues for Belizeans". At the end,
The Belize High School was victorious and won
the Central Region competition and advanced
to the semi-final round.
The second debate took place in Culture
Capital, Dangriga Town on November 25, 2013
between Georgetown Technical High School and
Stann Creek Ecumenical High School. Stann
Creek Ecumenical took the win! Further south,
Toledo Community College and Julian Cho
Technical High School faced off in the third
debate of the National competition. JCTHS was
the victorious team and advanced to Semi-Final
Rounds where they later faced Belmopan
Comprehensive College who had advanced by
default.
The other semi-finals match-up took place in
Belmopan between Belize High School and Stann
Creek Ecumenical High School. Belize High
School won their second match, and was the first
team to advance to Finals! Julian Cho Technical
High School was not far behind in taking the last
spot in the Finals after defeating Belmopan
Comprehensive High.
Each individual debate in the competition
highlights a different resolution which
contributes to the National Discussion on Oil in
Belize.
