TONIC | news On the move with Keely Andrew Six months ago, the Sunshine Coast’s Keely Andrew obliterated the two-event Masters and Women’s series. For her efforts, she pocketed a golden ticket to surf in the 2014 Roxy Pro trials. Keely then took the same winning form into the trials and, with perfect, superbank waves on offer, won her way into the main event. We caught up with Keely after her first round heat with 2013 World Champion, Carissa Moore. Surf Photo Cestari/ASP How have you found the Roxy Pro so far? It’s been a lot of fun! Coming up against Carissa [Moore] in the first heat was always going to be a great experience. Yes, that was quite a stacked heat, was it daunting? I was more excited than anything. I’ve always wanted to surf against Carissa and it was great to finally get the chance. How’d you find her? It’s kind of intimidating out in the water with her because she’s the world’s best, but overall, it wasn’t too bad. You won your position into the trials six months ago, what have you done in the meantime to prepare? The trials kind of snuck up on me and I hadn’t really been thinking about too much, I’ve been focusing on my qualifying events more than anything and train as much as possible. What kind of training are you doing? Training in the gym with Tim [Just] and with my coach working on some heat strategies and technique. So tell me what’s going on on the Sunshine Coast, because there seems to be quite a lot of talent coming out of the woodwork. [Laughs] I have no idea, maybe it’s because we have average waves a lot of the time and most competitions are run in average waves, comps become just like an average day at home. This year, Dimity Stoyle has qualified for the tour, you’ve just won the Roxy Pro trials and Isabella Nichols has been winning all kinds of junior events, what’s going on with the girls? Are you competitive with each other? We’re very competitive with each other, you know, whenever we see each other we get along pretty well and it’s always good to have two other girls from the same area as you, but also highly competitive to help push you. What’s next for you? The rest of this year, I’m just going to be trying to qualify for the tour. I have a few Pro Juniors and then I go to New Zealand. It’s been a lot of fun! Coming up against Carissa in the first heat was always going to be a great experience. ~ Keely Andrew Keely Andrew. Portrait Ben Whitmore 10 – autumn IssuE your regular dose of Surf News.
