Chances are, you’re running a pedalboard of your own, and if you’re not, you’re
certainly thinking about it. If you’re not there yet, there’s a lot of research to be
done. In your travels, jargon-laden terms such as “isolation,” “current draw” and
“milliamperes” will haunt your dreams and ruin your peaceful sleep.
That is, unless you keep this guide handy. I’m going to talk a bit about what power
supplies do, why you need one, whether or not you actually do need one, and cut
through all the BS, telling you which power supply fits your needs the best.
Let’s take a look at the biggest buzzword in power supplies: isolation. This word
is going to be one of the first things any power supply manufacturer mentions.
Much like the word “analog” in the synth world, if a power supply fails to mention
up front that it’s isolated, it is probably not.
