Honey Overdrive
The Sweet Honey Overdrive was designed
by Bjorn Juhl, a sort of mad scientist of
effects, for Mad Professor. It’s the only
pedal in this list with an obvious focus on
midrange frequencies, but it goes about
this differently than most midrange-heavy
overdrives. The Sweet Honey Overdrive
(SHOD as it’s known on forums) utilizes a
Focus control which controls both EQ and
gain. At low Focus settings, the SHOD is
less distorted, more neutrally voiced, and
less compressed. As the Focus control
increases, the SHOD gets dirtier, edgier,
and brighter. It’s a design that takes some
getting used to but it makes for a simple,
yet versatile pedal. And somehow, it makes
it work with just about any guitar and any
amp, as long as you like the sound and
attitude the SHOD brings to the party.
