We all yearn for self-improvement,
right? Well friends, I’m here to tell you
that building your own effects will make
you a better, smarter human being. This
is especially true if, like me, you have
very little experience with electronics
and building stuff. DIY pedal building
is a great place to begin learning about
basic electronics and the building blocks
of electric guitar sounds, from voltage
and impedance to pots, resistors, and
those all-important transistors. It’s a lowvoltage affair, so even if a budding DIY
enthusiast is something of a nitwit, there›s
little danger of seriously electrocuting
oneself. There are also plenty of simple
circuits on which to get started, many
are perfect for educating oneself about
common components and the job
they do within a circuit. Furthermore,
simple projects such as these are
an ideal platform for developing
one’s soldering competency. Being
able to solder and comprehend the
fundamentals of electronics are skills
that will come in handy for any electric
guitarist, and will likely save them a
few bucks in repair bills over the
years as well.
