interactive and has a milder
impact on the amount of
gain available. When the
Bright switch is set to A,
the pedal is VERY bright
and you will need to dial
back on the Treble control.
The three-band EQ makes
it easy to pair the Jekyll &
Hyde with a wide variety of
guitars and amps.
While the Hyde side of
the new Jekyll & Hyde
remained fairly constant,
the Jekyll side is entirely
new (sort of). Rather than
being a Tube Screamer,
it’s now a tweaked version
of the Open Road. But
like the overdrive on the
Route 66, it offers the
ability to blend your clean
signal with your overdrive
signal. Set clockwise, the
control gives 100 percent
overdrive and counterclockwise gives 100
percent clean. I’m a sucker
for pedals with the ability
to blend a clean signal
into my overdrive signal—I
find it makes for a more
interesting tone and can
mimic the sound of playing
through multiple amps
simultaneously. In this case,
it has the added ability of
allowing you to stack both
channels of the Jekyll &
Hyde even when the Hyde
side is seriously gained up
and still have a defined and
cutting tone.
Inside the Jekyll & Hyde
you will find controls for
turning the buffer on or off
on both sides of the pedal.
The TRUETONE buffer is
great and you’d be a fool
to turn it off unless you are
running the Jekyll & Hyde
before pedals that don’t
like to follow a buffer. On
the Hyde side, you’ll find
a control for turning the
noise gate on and off. I’m
not a fan of noise gates,
but this one is surprisingly
transparent and doesn’t
abruptly cut off fading
notes. That said, the noise
level in the Jekyll & Hyde
is extremely low so I won’t
judge you harshly if you
elect not to use the gate.
two sides of the Jekyll &
Hyde. You can also use a
patch cable to reverse the
order. To do this, simply
plug into the input on the
Jekyll side, run its output
to the input on the Hyde
side, and then run the
output of the Hyde side to
your next effect or onto
your amp.
WHAT WE LIKE
The Jekyll & Hyde offers
two great tastes that taste
great together: a low-tomedium-gain overdrive
and a low-to-high-gain
distortion. Both sides of
the pedal run from subtle
to extreme and offer
surprising range of tones.
CONCERNS
None.
The inclusion of
independent In and Out
jacks for each side of the
pedal is great. It means
you can use each side
separately with a switching
system and/or that you can
insert pedals between the
