WOW-FUZZ
The Sola Sound and Colorsound names
carry a lot of weight in the vintage
pedal arena, and it’s not for nothing.
You may know them from the various
incarnations of the Tone Bender fuzz,
as well as other iconic effects like the
spectacular Overdriver and the mighty
One-Knob Fuzz. The Sola Sound company
also made more than a couple fuzz-wah
combos under the Colorsound moniker
that varied in quality from pretty great to
unspeakably wonderful. Its new version of
the Colorsound Wow-
Fuzz, created in
partnership with
David A. Main
of D.A.M. pedals
and Stuart
Castledine
of Castledine
Electronics,
is certainly the
latter. Its silicon
transistor-based
fuzz is an authentic
reproduction of the
original, with a fat,
silky tone that perfectly
complements the dramatic,
highly musical sweep of
the inductor-based wah.
The custom-wound vintage
repro inductors probably have

something to do with this. And in the
interest of maximum authenticity, the
striking orange enclosures are even
pressed on the same machine that
pressed the original ‘60s models. Macari’s
in the UK, famous retailer and sister
company to Sola Sound, sells these
pedals new for 399 British pounds. Whoa.
