This incredibly oddball , yet-usable device is literate . That ’ s right : It reads harmonic content from a signal source and generates singing feedback in one of seven modes . I remember way back in the day ( the ‘ 90s to be exact ) when the Fernandes Sustainer system came out . I lusted for one after my dog mistook my EBow for a chew toy and masticated it right when I was getting savvy with it . I never got around to installing a Sustainer and probably would have botched the operation back in my chemically addled adolescence . Twenty years later , I just might be able to attain all those electro-animalistic Adrian Belew type tone treatments with DigiTech ’ s new FreqOut . This silver stomper can sing in 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd and 5 th harmonic feedback voices with an additional Sub setting and Natural Hi and Low to boot . Perhaps the coolest features ( besides the slick sci-fi aesthetic of the Feedback LED strip ) are the Momentary and Dry toggles . The former lets us burst into a swell of feedback on the fly while holding down the footswitch while the later kills the unaffected signal for EBow-esque whale wailing . I haven ’ t put this through the paces yet , but I can already imagine jamming along to the Talking Heads ’ s Remain in Light or Eno and Byrne ’ s timeless My Life in the Bush of Ghosts with this sustain enabler .
