The adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) by 45 states demonstrates that state leaders are now thinking differently and more seriously about the future of our nation's education. National systemic issues in education such as inequitable access to curricula for students, marginalization of underserved populations for whatever reason, and lack of vision in educational leadership all have lead to reforming educational practices. The CCSS writers collaborated with experts throughout the nation to research international educational systems, structures, practices, and procedures to glean insight into the reasons for their outperformance of the U.S. in academia. It concluded that since the U.S. is competing in a global economy, it must have a highly productive workforce that will require schools to provide a much more rigorous and relevant education. Their findings and the development of a common set of rigorous standards have opened the system for students throughout the United States to be more competitive in a global marketplace and to instill characteristics in children that would prepare them for careers and/or college. The CCSS provide an opportunity to transform education standards to be more aligned with today’s world.

In 2011, the Chief Council of State School Officers (CCSSO) along with the Asia Society Partnership for Global Learning published its recommendations and considerations for educating students with a global competence. There is an urgency to develop future leaders that have a global mindset that can lead the
