Nobody likes to shave every day. It's time-consuming and irritating, but it's what men do. At least the ones without beards. And the ones who haven't embraced the Age of Scruff, who know that a few days' stubble doesn't make them look a little bit like Clooney; it makes them look tired and sloppy. We're not saying you can't lay down your blade every now and again -- what else are weekends and vacations for? You just shouldn't make a habit out of it.

To prove my commitment to the cause, and to get the closest shave possible, I recently used a straight razor for a few weeks. It's not for the hurried or squeamish, but there were some things about it -- the eerily smooth results, the victorious feeling that comes with not killing yourself -- that I liked. Below is a beginner's guide to handling one. Most of these steps also apply to shaving with multiblade razors, which, I should admit, I've recently started using again. Every day.
