RESPIRATORY CARE PROGRAM FEATURED ON CBS NEWS
What do liverwurst and Jell-O™ have in common? They’ re two unusual pieces of“ equipment” used in GMercyU’ s Respiratory Care program’ s Bronchoscopy Lab.
“ It really simulates lung tissue,” said Respiratory Care Program Coordinator Randy Solly MS, RRT, RPFT, AE-C.
Respiratory Therapy students participated in a hands-on bronchoscopy lab this spring, an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the common procedure used to diagnose problems in the lungs.
With the demand for respiratory therapists growing much faster than the average occupation, this lab is just one of the many hands-on experiences GMercyU provides to ensure students develop the skills needed to meet the needs of the healthcare industry. During the lab, students participated in a simulated bronchoscopy by performing biopsies on liverwurst, and needle aspirations and brushings of Jell-O™.

LILLY ENDOWMENT THRIVING CONGREGATIONS GRANT UPDATE
In July 2024, GMercyU received a $ 1.25 million grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc. to support the“ We are the Now of the Church: Young Adult Synodal Ministry and Thriving Catholic Congregations” initiative.
The project is being funded through Lilly Endowment’ s Thriving Congregations Initiative, aimed to encourage flourishing congregations by helping them deepen their relationships with God, enhance their connections with each other, and contribute to the vitality of their communities and the world.
Since receiving the grant, GMercyU has worked with other SCHEAP( Synodality in Catholic Higher Education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia) members to create Synodal Fellows, a program designed to empower two young adults from each SCHEAP institution to be trained in the synodal method of listening. The initiative’ s goal is to expand beyond SCHEAP throughout the Archdiocese.
Students will also get to enjoy recent renovations to residence halls, new eateries on campus, and renovations to the Frank O. Genuardi Legends baseball and softball fields and The Griffin( Athletic) Complex.
“ Our team has enjoyed getting to know students and their families and we’ re excited to keep the momentum going in the new year,” Vice President for Enrollment Aimee Huffstetler said.“ It’ s a great time to be a GMercyU Griffin.”
