Who Is This Woman , and What Is She Doing ?
As part of our 75th anniversary celebrations , GMercyU welcomed a striking bronze statue of Catherine McAuley , foundress of the Sisters of Mercy , to campus this fall . The statue serves as physical reminder of our mercy values , which – as Catherine McMahon , RSM ' 71 once said – are an antidote to the increasing levels of divisiveness and incivility seen in society today .
What follows is a speech given by Marie Michele Donnelly , RSM ' 68 at the event held to celebrate this new addition to campus .
“ Many of us here know a lot about Catherine McAuley and her establishment of the House of Mercy on Baggot Street in Dublin [ Ireland ]. What we might not know about Catherine is that she recognized the needs of the poor and the uneducated and had a funny way of helping other people notice them , too .
