Barbara Kaufmann , RSM ’ 56
Sister Barbara Kaufmann passed away on December 9 , 2021 at 85 years old . Sister Barbara was a longtime member of the GMercyU Community , starting with her time as a student at then Gwynedd Mercy Junior College before entering the Sisters of Mercy in 1956 .
Sister Barbara returned home in 1971 as an assistant in the Financial Aid Office . It was there where she spent the next 40 years as the director , helping thousands of students experience a Mercy education . In fact , you may remember Sister Barbara as the face of a marketing campaign where she was featured on billboards as the “ Saint of Financial Aid .”
The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas shared the following :
“ In her ministry , Sister reached out to the students in a caring and competent way , always with a smile and a sincere desire to help each student be able to afford a college education . Known for her organizational and perfectionist ways , she always had a smile for whoever came to her for help . She was gracious to everyone who visited her at McAuley and would always say . ‘ I will pray you my thanks .’”
