INDUSTRIAL RESINS
Traffic levels, load requirements, and durability expectations all influence the specification of an industrial flooring system.
Specifying industrial resin flooring
Saint Gobain Technical Finishes
Industrial resin flooring can receive relatively little attention during the early stages of a project, yet it can have a big impact on a facility ' s performance, maintenance requirements, and long-term costs. When considering products to specify, it is wise for architects and clients to ask prospective suppliers five basic questions, advises Technical Finishes, part of the Saint Gobain group.
For specifiers, the challenge isn ' t a lack of options. It ' s identifying the right system for the environment in which it will perform. Technical Finishes recommends the following approach.
What will the floor be exposed to?
One of the most common mistakes in flooring specification is selecting a system based on appearance or upfront cost rather than the conditions it will face every day.
Consider two projects: a distribution warehouse and a dairy processing facility. Both may require resin flooring, but their operating conditions are completely different.
A warehouse floor must withstand constant forklift traffic, abrasion, and heavy loads. A dairy floor, on the other hand, may be exposed to lactic acids, hot washdowns, steam cleaning, and frequent temperature fluctuations. Specifying the same flooring system for both environments could result in premature failure in one of them.
Understanding exactly what the floor will encounter throughout its service life is the first step toward selecting a system that can withstand the environment rather than merely survive it.
How important are hygiene and cleanability?
In food and beverage facilities, pharmaceutical plants, hospitals, and commercial kitchens, the floor plays an important role in hygiene and contamination control. It is part of the facility’ s overall hygiene strategy, rather than simply a surface finish.
Cracks, failed joints, and surface defects can become collection points for dirt, moisture, and bacteria, making cleaning more difficult and increasing the number of hygiene risks. Seamless resin flooring
