Is revival happening?
South Africa’ s design and construction industry is not on the wane. It’ s evolving.
This is a summary of sentiments expressed in this spring edition of To Build. Yes, we are facing enormous challenges, but there are roleplayers rising to the challenge and facing problems in the established South African way.
Companies are being innovative, backed by their professional and trade associations that include the Master Builders Associations, the SA Institute of Steel Construction, the Kitchen Specialists Association( KSA), architectural associations, and others. They respond to this changing environment with new paradigms, plans, and programmes.
Linke Ströhmenger, President of the South African Institute of Architectural Technologists, gives hard-earned advice, speaking from the heart to architectural technology startups and younger professionals. And in a another article, Professional Architect John Carter shares his view on how there is an additional dimension to Sullivan’ s Form Follows Function rule, the element of“ the HOW”. This is especially true in Africa where, in certain instances, the how depends on locality and this trumps form.
One of our regular contributors in the design and decor industry, Kim Williams, shares in detail her experiences and key takeouts from the world’ s largest design event, Milan Design Week 2026, which took place this May. A great read.
Despite there being a somewhat harder focus on the construction side, our spring edition has not forgotten the design, decor, and consumer market, so in between the hard end of construction content, consumers and homeowners will be delighted to find the usual helpful information and tips.
