DESIGN – INTERIORS
Designing with scent
Another fascinating shift was the growing recognition of scent as a design element. Many installations incorporated subtle fragrances that enhanced their atmosphere and emotional impact. Visitors were immersed in the environments rather than simply observing them.
Designers often focus on visual and spatial considerations, yet scent has an extraordinary ability to evoke memory, influence mood, and create lasting impressions. It reinforces the idea that successful spaces engage all the senses.
Furniture designed for contemporary living
Furniture is adapting to the way we live. Many pieces embraced flexibility and multifunctionality, reflecting the fluid nature of contemporary lifestyles. Furniture is no longer expected to perform a single role; it is increasingly designed to respond to changing needs throughout the day.
Organic curves sat comfortably alongside stronger architectural lines, balancing softness and structure. The result was furniture that felt both beautiful and purposeful, supporting modern living while retaining a strong sense of craftsmanship.
Technology in the background
One of the most encouraging observations was how quietly technology is integrating into design.
Functionality as experience
Functionality continues to evolve beyond practical necessity. Throughout Milan, designers demonstrated how it can be integrated into beautiful spaces without compromising aesthetics.
Integrated charging stations, concealed work surfaces, and subtle digital functionality appeared throughout many collections. Rather than becoming the focal point, technology worked behind the scenes to enhance daily life.
This seamless integration allows design, materiality, and craftsmanship to remain at the forefront. It felt far more considered than the overtly technology-driven design of previous years.
Rather than treating practical requirements as separate challenges, designers are weaving them into the overall experience. The result is environments that feel intuitive, effortless, and carefully considered. The best design solutions often go unnoticed because they simply work.
Looking forward
Milan Design Week ultimately reinforced that the future of design extends beyond creating beautiful spaces. It is about creating environments that support wellbeing, encourage connection, and engage us on a sensory level.
The most inspiring designs were not necessarily the loudest or most complex. They were the ones that quietly improved the experience of being in a space. As designers, that is perhaps the most valuable lesson we can take forward.
